Robert Rigg advises clients on protecting, enforcing, and maximizing the value of their intellectual property.

He works across patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters and guides clients on portfolio management and IP-related transactions.

Bob defends clients against infringement claims and pursues enforcement actions when their rights are violated. His work spans a range of technologies, including electrical and heavy machinery, pharmaceuticals, chemistry, computer systems and business methods. He has served as lead counsel in federal district courts, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the International Trade Commission, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Bob takes a focused approach to litigation by quickly identifying the key issues and directing resources toward the most critical aspects. He develops a clear narrative early on, refining it as the case progresses. By leveraging talent strategically, Bob ensures his clients receive both high-quality representation and cost-effective results.

Bob’s clients range from large manufacturers and medical device and pharmaceutical companies to consumer products businesses, small enterprises and individual innovators. In addition to his litigation work, he advises clients on developing and managing IP portfolios, facilitates the buying and selling of IP assets, and assists with securing international IP protection.

Many lawyers take a scorched earth approach to litigation, throwing a team of lawyers to investigate every possible potential issue. In my experience this does nothing to increase the chance of winning and only results in higher costs to the client.

Experience

  • Most recently, represented a power tool company against a company that was selling knock-off products in the U.S. market. Won an exclusion order at the International Trade Commission. Thereafter then negotiated technology licensing agreements with every company in the industry that resulted in significant ongoing royalty payments to the client and avoided the cost of any additional litigation expenses.
